I’m going on my 10th year of teaching my students how to detox through Ayurvedic cleansing. One of the most common questions I hear from my clients is… What makes a cleanse Ayurvedic? What are the Ayurvedic cleanse benefits? And why is it so much better than a traditional detox? Good question!
Let me tell you this. I’ve been practicing Ayurveda for 18 years. Ayurveda literally saved my life a long time ago. I can tell you with certainty that detox DIETS are not anywhere near as powerful for improving your health as an Ayurvedic cleanse is. Here’s why.
3 Reasons Why Detox Diets Won’t Make You Healthier, but an Ayurvedic Cleanse Will
1. Your metabolism
Most detox diets are built around limited calorie consumption. You want to lose weight- you eat less. Makes sense, right? Wrong! It doesn’t have to be this way! Limiting your food consumption will send your body into “starvation mode” by slowing down your metabolism. What this means is that your body will start preserving fat and to be able to produce energy later. All the weight you lose during a detox diet is most likely just water. Will it produce results in the short run? Yes. You will see lower numbers when you step on the scale… but it won’t stick.
You want a detox program that gives you real, lasting, sustainable results. Not just a temporary (and potentially stripping or dehydrating) fix.

In Ayurvedic cleanse programs, we first identify symptoms of dehydration – things like insomnia, dizziness, anxiety, lightheadedness, constipation, feeling scattered, indecision, joint pain, brittle bones, and high sensitivity. Then we look at the season we’re in. What’s fresh and available right now that’s a remedy for those symptoms? Then we make sure all the nutrients we need to help settle those symptoms (magnesium, absorbable protein, electrolytes, probiotics) are in place. And we do most of it through food.
The education that comes from approaching your health like this is life-changing. You learn tools that carry you through all kinds of situations where, before, you wouldn’t have known what to do. And now you do. It’s truly empowering!
3. Great tasting recipes
As I mentioned before, most detoxes restrict your choice to a very narrow selection of foods you can eat. Most people quit dieting because they cannot stand the taste or get bored with the same food. Kitchari with Vegetables
Preparation Time: 45 minutes
Yield: 3 to 4 Servings
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Organic Brown Rice or Quinoa
1/4 cup Moong Dahl – Tiny Yellow Lentils. Can also use red lentils
6 cups Purified Water
1 Tablespoon Ghee or Coconut Oil
1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seed
1 inch Fresh Ginger Root, peeled and minced
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Cardamom Powder
1 Bay Leaf
1/2 teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt
1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin
1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
1/4 bunch Fresh Cilantro, chopped
1 teaspoon Cold Pressed, Virgin Olive Oil
Various Vegetables (see variation)
How to make it:
Warm the ghee in a medium saucepan over medium/high heat. Add whole cumin seeds and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Wash rice and dahl well (until water is clear) in a fine mesh colander. Add rice and dahl to ghee and stir one minute before adding water, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and bay leaf. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and cook over medium-low heat for 30 – 40 minutes*, stirring occasionally. Add salt, cumin, and turmeric. Garnish with cilantro and olive oil to serve. Kitchari is considered one of the most healing meals of Ayurvedic Cuisine.
Most detox diets and cleanses are focused to produce a short-term result. In the long-run, you are not doing your body a favor going through this detox roller-coaster. You will most likely not improve your health and even gain your weight back.
